How Do I Audition for VYT?

Be A Star

Valley Youth Theatre holds auditions throughout the year. All you need to do is show up! Pick the shows or shows you want to audition for, pick the day that works for you and come down to our theatre!

Click here for our audition schedule.

Audition Location:

Valley Youth Theatre
525 North First Street in Downtown Phoenix
SE Corner of First Street & Fillmore

Here's What You'll Need

A picture of yourself (a school photo or home snapshot will do) with your name, age and phone number printed on the back. If you've performed before or would like us to know about any special skills you have (sing, play a musical instrument, dance, juggle, speak a second language), put that information on a piece of paper with your name, address, phone number and age, and bring that with you too!

If you've done this before, bring along your current headshot and performing resume.

Many of our shows are musicals, and we'd like you to sing for us at the audition. We'll provide an accompanist (bring your own sheet music!), or you can bring a tape/CD for accompaniment (we have a tape/CD player available).

For non-musicals, no singing will be required.

For musicals, please dress appropriate to dance. Please do not wear sandals or skirts. If you choose to bring a change of clothes, changing areas will be provided to do so. Also, we recommend you bring a bottle of water to remain hydrated and energized. Remember, the key to a great audition is being prepared!

After the Audition

You will be notified by phone or by mail if you are "called back." If you are, you will be given a day and time to come back to the theatre. You will read scenes from the script along with others.

If you are not called back, do not be discouraged. Often times, we simply don't have enough parts for the many people who audition, and auditioning is a matching process. It is important that we carefully match individual actors with scripted characters that have specific qualities envisioned by the playwright.

Don't give up! Remember: Auditioning takes practice too! The more you audition, the more comfortable you will be, and the more you will learn.

We have made sure that your name is on our mailing list, so you will receive our newsletter with notification of upcoming auditions, productions, and our fantastic workshops.

If You Are Cast

You will be expected to attend all scheduled rehearsals. Rehearsals are typically scheduled Monday through Thursday evenings, all day Saturday and every day beginning the week prior to show opening.

Because Valley Youth Theatre does not charge a fee for young people to participate in our mainstage productions, parents are asked instead to volunteer helping with set & costume construction and front of house during the run of the show.
