How Do I Audition for VYT?
Valley Youth Theatre holds auditions throughout the year. All you need to do is show up! Pick the show or shows you want to audition for, the day that works for you and come down to our theatre!
You only need to be at one of the audition days.
Click here for an audition form (pdf). Please note that ALL potential conflicts must be given to us no later than callbacks, preferably at the auditions.
Valley Youth Theatre
525 North First Street in Downtown Phoenix
SE Corner of First Street & Fillmore
Doors open at approximately 3:30pm; auditions begin at approximately 4pm and are conducted in a small group format.
Here's What You'll Need
An audition form. Please fill this form out and bring it to the auditions with you. You must be between 7 and 19 years old to audition. If you are unable to print it out, blank audition forms will be available when you check in at auditions. Please check the rehearsal calendar provided at auditions and make sure we know of any and all conflicts you might have prior to casting.
A picture of yourself (a school photo or home snapshot will do) with your name, age and phone number printed on the back. If you've performed before or would like us to know about any special skills you have (sing, play a musical instrument, dance, juggle, speak a second language), put that information on a piece of paper with your name, address, phone number and age, and bring that with you too!
If you've done this before, bring along your current headshot and performing arts resume.
Most of our shows at Valley Youth Theatre are musicals. At these auditions we'd like you to sing for us. We provide an accompanist (bring your own sheet music!), or you can bring a CD or MP3 player for accompaniment (we have a CD player available). You are welcome to prepare anything from 16 bars to an entire song. The director/musical director will let you know when to stop singing if you have prepared a longer selection.
For musicals, please dress in appropriate attire to dance. Please do not wear sandals or skirts. If you choose to bring a change of clothes, changing areas will be provided to do so. Also, we recommend you bring a bottle of water to remain hydrated and energized. Remember, the key to a great performing arts audition is being prepared!
For non-musicals, neither singing nor a prepared monologue will be required. You will be provided with a side when you check in.
After the Audition
Valley Youth Theatre will notify you via this website if you are "called back." If you are, you will be given a day and time to come back to the theatre. You, along with others, will read scenes, sing songs, and possibly learn a dance from the show.
If you are not called back, do not be discouraged. Often times, we simply don't have enough parts for the many people who audition, and auditioning is a matching process. It is important that we carefully match individual actors with scripted characters that have specific qualities envisioned by the playwright. Don't give up! Remember: Auditioning takes practice too! The more you audition, the more comfortable you will be, and the more you will learn.
We will make sure that your name is on our performing arts mailing list, so you will receive our newsletter with notification of upcoming auditions, productions, and our fantastic workshops.
If You Are Cast
You will be expected to attend all scheduled rehearsals. Rehearsals are typically scheduled Monday through Thursday evenings, all day Saturday and daily beginning the week prior to show opening.
Because Valley Youth Theatre does not charge a fee for young people to participate in our mainstage productions, parents are required to volunteer by helping with set and costume construction, and front of house during the run of the show.
